Order of the Thorne has intuitive puzzles and storyline, however it is fairly short in duration, at least it seemed that way to me. Then again, maybe I just wanted more! I definitely enjoyed my romp through this homage to 90's adventure gaming.. Bought this during the summer sale and I'm so glad I did. Kinda' wish I'd paid full price, in hindsight. I'd love to support this team and encourage them to get part 2 out!!What I loved most about this game isn't quite quantifiable. Was it the soundtrack? Definitely a factor. The characters? Charmingly fresh yet familiar. The graphics? Holy♥♥♥♥♥♥this game is gorgeous. The gameplay? Simple, yes, but extremely satisfying, with a music mechanic that never feels clunky or forced. But really, it's the little details. The sound of wavering vhs audio in the logo screen. A sunburst particle effect that's so spot-on I don't even notice until afterward. This game is swimming in the best kind of nostalgia. It captures the true essence of not only those old Sierra games, but the era in which they were birthed. The entire atmosphere of the late-80s, early-90s media landscape is encapsulated in this one, delightful game. It's a trip down memory lane without the SCUMM emulator and bash-your-head-against-the-wall puzzles. A beautiful fusion of the old and new.I guess the easiest way to say this is, this game makes me feel like I'm eight years old with such a stunning accuracy that I'm repeatedly shocked to remember it was released two years ago. I was eight years old in 1991. (Which, honestly, probably means I'm the ideal demographic for this game.). The Order of the Throne - The King's Challenge is a nice, fun, easy to play Point & Click Adventure game which is in many ways meant to mimic the style and formula of Sierra's classic King's Quest series.First off, the graphics are intentionally meant to look retro in the style of early 90's P&C games. Knowing that, I wouldn't be expecting something like HD quality 3D animations or movie like cinematics. I was expecting pixelated graphics and that's what I got. Considering the style they used I'd say the graphcs were actually pretty good. Nice hand drawn backgrounds, sprites, animations. All of them probably taking hours of labor and a love of classic games in this style to create. Some of the scenes are quite lovely others are a little mediocre but overall very nice. The sound however isn't quite on par with the graphics. Most of the voice clips are good or decent quality but there's an unexpectedly large number of voices that sound poorly recorded. The worst is the narrator who is not only poorly recorded but whose voice and accent I find abhorrent. His voice is extremely grating. The accent is excessively fake and supremely annoying. It's fine to have characters with accents even ones that sound fake but the narrators voice is someone who is trying too hard and completely failing in every conceivable way. The overall voice acting quality (excluding the narrator) was decent, not the greatest but reasonable. The scripting however left something to be desired. Though it strives to evoke a sense of King's Quest nostalgia it lacks the humor and quality writing. It also lacks a compelling story. King's Quest 1 actually didn't have a very compelling story either but if got away with it because there wasn't anything like it and it was a new thing. It really pioneered the genre. Order of the Throne however, coming on the scene in this day and age really should have brought a little more to the table. The game was planned as a series so I'm hoping that they will be able to create more compelling stories in future releases and I look forward to seeing the next installment either way.The interface is only okay. There were many times when you try to click the edge of the screen to exit but you just walk to the edge of the screen. Sometimes finding the right spot to exit seemed overly frustrating having to walk away again before being able to click the exit. I found the menu's to be very disappointing. They didn't really feel like they matched the game and seemed a little busy and crowded. I wasn't a fan of the lute playing menu. It's part of the puzzle (especially if you want to get all the achievements) but I felt like it wasted time showing you each song and you couldn't just look at what each song was without having to go through the demonstration each time. The puzzles in the game are pretty logical and straightforward. IF you read through the dialogues and think it trough the puzzles are mostly pretty easy. If you somehow get stuck just remember to talk to everyone and exhaust all options and then of course try combining inventory items and using them on your surroundings. There are several achievements in the game most are completely unmissable I can only think of one that might be able to miss. Most will come naturally as you play the game but don't require much effort on the part of the player to achieve. This is a little disappointing as I prefer that there be at least a few achievements that are actually a challenge and require you to put some effort into achieving. The only one I think you could miss (which is the only one that really involves and effort) is the one that requires you to play each song on your lute in "hard mode" it can be missed if you decide to let Finn auto play songs in "easy mode".One of the major drawbacks of the game is that it's so short. I played through only once with a recorded play time of 5.7 hours... however, I left the game running on my computer for about 3 hours as I walked away from it. So real playtime is more like 2.7 hours (let's just generously round up and say 3 hours) at the full price of $9.99 that's about $3/hour of playtime, not in my opinion the best payoff at that price point. If you can get it on sale (and it has gone on sale frequently) then it becomes a much better buy.Overall it's fun, moderately easy, and a good way to kill a few hours.. As the king of the elves calls for his annual challenge, you are on your way to participate in the competition which this year requires you to find the queen, hidden somewhere in the kingdom of the elves. Equipped with nothing more than his lute, Finn the Bard gets ready for a very enjoyable adventure that entertained me more than many of the modern Telltale, Daedalic, etc. games.'The Order of the Thorne - The King's Challenge' is an old style point and click adventure that reminds a lot of 'Kings Quest' and the old 'LucasArts' games. It’s short, lovely, funny and heart warming. Take a break from the AAA scene and relax for a couple of hours with caring elves, treacherous pixies, introvert fisherman, nasty gnomes, helpful turtles, beautiful ladies and a spider woman with the most sexiest voice ever (please tell me one more time I may not pass...)Pros:- good music- good puzzles- you can't die- great humour- great narrator- very good voice acting- visit a graveyard with tombstones for each developer- most sexy voice of a spider lady in a PC game ever- easy achievementsNeutral:- pixel graphics (I won't put them on the cons list because they are still beautiful)- some might say the game is too short. I think it's OK. It took me six hours to finish the game. But I took my time and enjoyed playing it slowly.Cons:none. This was an amazing game from start to finsih. I was a fan of the King's Quest series as a little girl, and this renewed my love for point and click games. Worth every penny, and I can't wait to play the next! Great job!. It was a very nice experience. Playing beautiful songs as a bard was the best thing for me in this game. Landscapes are really pretty and dialogues are well written.Oh and the storyteller has awesome voice, would listen to him for hours <3. Solid little game!As a fan of old school point-and-click adventure games I was very excited for this release, and I have to say I did have a lot of fun with this game. The basic plot is that you are taking part in the King's Challenge and must locate the Queen who has hidden somewhere in the Kingdom. The controls are quite simple; only left and right click (use and examine). No text commands, but there is the lute interface which works well and is the "unique selling point" of the game, as it were. While the puzzles are easier than I've become accustomed to for this genre, they are not trivial by any means. The art and music are beautiful and the characters and environment are really well done. Considering everything is hand-drawn pixel art, the kingdom and forest are pretty extensive. The voice acting was a really nice addition and I also appreciated having the option to skip ahead if you've read faster than them. The game has a lot of unique touches and personality to it. While the adventure is fairly short and contained only to one setting, there is plenty of detail within which still gives the player a rich experience. There is humour in it too; I liked the running gag where you kept bumping into the two women trying to befriend the gnome who wasn't having any of it. Really amusing. My main gripe with the game is how "bare bones" it still felt with regards to the amount of interaction available other than that which was needed to continue the plot. This could just be that I'm used to having text commands available though, and they did the best they could with the two click system. There are also a couple of bugs (at the time of writing this) such as some conversation trees still being available when you'd already progressed past that part of the game. This was a little jarring although nothing game-breaking.On the other hand the forest and swamp are large enough that you have a lot of area to just walk around, explore and try things out. Did I mention it's really beautiful?Overall this was a very enjoyable game with lots of personality and a nice story, despite being quite short and small-world.It was extremely good value for the price paid (£6.99) and I will probably get the next episodes when they come out. Would recommend to fans of the genre.
